3. Grandma definitely left those letters out in the open to see if his eyes would look towards them when he entered the room. Sharp as ever, she is no fool. She must suspect he is somehow connected to the palace and the emperor, so no need to ask about his background because she knows it will all be cover lies. She saw the mutual affection between them, so her main goal was to warn him not to hurt her granddaughter with those lies; a point which she made quite clear to him. Sadly he did hurt her with this lie, even if it was for the best in his circumstances. He will regret this lie more than anything.
